Bespoke Geometric Balustrade for Curved Concrete Staircase
Project Location: Dunloy, County Antrim
This high-end residential project in Dunloy was a true test of precision engineering. The client commissioned our team to design, build, and install a bespoke metal balustrade for a new, curved concrete staircase.
Because the property is located in the heart of County Antrim, we wanted to ensure the design matched the high standards of the local architecture.
The “before” and “during” images show the raw concrete structure, which presented a significant technical challenge.
The Challenge: Uneven Angles
Initially, the raw concrete structure presented a significant technical challenge. For example, the builders cast the staircase in three separate releases. Consequently, this process resulted in slight variations in the length and angle of the steps.
Therefore, our challenge was twofold:
- First, we needed to create a complex, geometric-patterned balustrade that looked seamless.
- Second, we had to maintain a consistent handrail flow that strictly followed Staircase Railings safety regulations.
Our Solution: On-Site Engineering
To overcome this, we adopted a multi-stage process that highlights our problem-solving skills.
1. On-Site Pre-Fitting: Instead of building blindly in the workshop, we pre-made the entire balustrade directly onto the raw concrete steps. As a result, we could map the steel to the stair’s true form. Furthermore, this allowed us to account for the exact depth of the timber treads that the joiners would fit later.
2. Custom Design: The design features a striking geometric pattern, which we custom-forged from mild steel. Additionally, we expertly curved the handrail to follow the staircase, finishing it with an elegant handcrafted volute (spiral) at the base.
3. Durable Finish: Once we finished fabrication, we removed the entire system. Then, we professionally powder-coated it in a sophisticated dark finish. This ensures the metalwork remains durable and maintenance-free for years.
The Final Result
The finished project is a stunning statement piece that transforms the home’s entrance hall. It demonstrates how bespoke metalwork can turn a difficult architectural challenge into a breathtaking feature.
