Bespoke Geometric Balustrade for Curved Concrete Staircase

Project Location: Dunloy

This high-end residential project in Dunloy was a true test of precision engineering and craftsmanship. Our team was commissioned to design, fabricate, and install a bespoke metal balustrade for a new, curved concrete staircase.

The “before” and “during” images show the raw concrete structure, which presented a significant technical challenge.

The Challenge: Inconsistent Angles & Seamless Flow

The concrete staircase was cast in three separate releases. This process resulted in slight variations in the going lengths and rake angles of the steps.

Our challenge was twofold:

  1. To create a complex, geometric-patterned balustrade that appeared seamless.
  2. To maintain a perfectly consistent handrail flow that strictly adhered to all building control regulations, despite the inconsistencies in the staircase below.

Our Solution: On-Site Fabrication & Meticulous Fitting

To overcome this, we adopted a multi-stage process that highlights our problem-solving expertise:

  • 1. On-Site Pre-Fitting: We pre-made the entire balustrade directly onto the raw concrete steps (as seen in the “during” photos with our welding gear). This allowed us to perfectly map the balustrade to the stair’s true form, while also accounting for the exact depth of the timber treads that would be fitted later.
  • 2. Custom Design: The balustrade features a striking, contemporary geometric pattern, custom-forged in mild steel. The handrail was expertly curved to follow the staircase, finishing in an elegant handcrafted volute (spiral) at the base.
  • 3. Durable Finish: Once fabricated, the entire system was removed and professionally powder-coated in a durable, sophisticated dark finish.
  • 4. Flawless Final Installation: After the client’s timber treads were in place, our team returned for the final fit. This was a delicate operation requiring extreme care to protect the pristine powder-coated finish. The balustrade dowels were bored through the new timber and chemically fixed (as seen in the installation photo) into the concrete structure below, guaranteeing a rock-solid, permanent, and high-quality installation.

The final result is a stunning statement piece that transforms the home’s entrance hall, demonstrating how bespoke metalwork can turn an architectural challenge into a breathtaking feature.
