Bespoke Residential Fire Escape in Cushendall

At BMC, we believe even essential safety structures should look good. Recently, we completed this residential fire escape replacement for a private apartment block in Cushendall.
Because the property is in the heart of the Glens of Antrim, the new stairs needed to be durable enough for the coastal weather but stylish enough for a home.
The Challenge: Safety vs Style
Often, fire escapes look purely functional and industrial. However, our goal here was different. We wanted to create a replacement that was Fire Escapes & Stairs (fully compliant) but also aesthetically pleasing.
Therefore, we aimed to remove the harsh, commercial feel of the old stairs. Instead, we introduced a design with a softer, residential quality.
Our Solution: Custom Fabrication
Our team designed, built, and installed this multi-level steel system. To achieve the perfect balance of safety and style, we focused on three key areas:
- 1. Robust Safety: We engineered the structure from heavy-duty steel. Specifically, we used anti-slip checker plate (durbar plate) for the treads and landings. Consequently, this ensures secure footing for residents in all weather conditions, from rain to ice.
- 2. Ornamental Details: Unlike standard industrial bars, we incorporated a subtle ornamental twist into the balustrade bars. This custom detail brings a touch of artistry to the structure. Ultimately, it elevates the stair from a simple utility to a considered architectural feature.
- 3. Coastal Protection: Because Cushendall is a coastal location, rust protection is vital. Therefore, we protected the entire staircase with a modern, durable grey finish. This means it will stand up to the salty air and elements for decades.
The Result
Finally, this project proves that safety structures do not have to be ugly. We delivered a fully functional residential fire escape that enhances the property’s exterior.
